Come Thou Fount

Back in about 2000 I was asked to give a talk in Church. They told me that I would need to talk for 20-25 minutes. I've never had a problem with preparing too little material. So 20-25 minutes was a slam dunk for me. In fact, the talk probably was closer to 30 minutes and that was with me rushing it. What can I say? I'm my mother's daughter.

I remember as I was getting ready for Church that day, that the thought popped into my head, "I hope that someone sings 'Come Thou Fount' for the musical number." That was quite an ambitious thought for me because A) Come Thou Fount is a choir number and B) It's not exactly a light happy hymn. True, everyone that I know loves it, but that is because it is more of a soul-wrenching type of hymn.

"Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love."

I didn't give it another thought. I got to Church and saw that I was the first talk on the schedule. I delivered the talk (which to this day is my most favorite talk that I have ever given) and sat down.

As my heart stopped pounding, my friend Ken Merritt got up and in a clear and beautiful voice started singing, "Come Thou Fount."

I nearly leaped out of my chair. It was literally ALL I could do to keep myself seated. A million thoughts were running through my head, but the dominant one was my Spirit shouting, "Thank you, Heavenly Father!"

After Ken finished singing and sat down next to me I said, "How how how did you come to sing that song today?!" He looked a little startled and said, "I got here and they asked me to do an impromptu musical number. I went to the library and saw the music sitting there and figured it was a good choice."

Lesson learned: No prayer is too small. No thought goes unheard. The Lord chooses His Tender Mercies.
