Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Reviewer's Grade: A

I am a big C.S. Lewis fan and so several years ago when they finally made a movie out of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, I was thrilled!  Then I loved Prince Capsian, especially because that Ben Barnes was so cute.  So, I was pretty excited for Voyage of the Dawn Treader to come out and decided that we would go opening night.  My son loves the other two movies and I am encouraging them over Harry Potter for now because he is only seven.  I know I am in the minority, but I don't feel that the Harry Potter movies are for children under the age of ten.

Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a little different because Peter and Susan are hardly in the movie.  They were also hardly in the book.  However, the now older Edmund and Lucy hold their own and my affection for Edmund grew, mostly because he really does look like my nephew, Sam.  At first I didn't think they used the same actor to play Caspian in this one, however, I just hadn't watched the other movie for a while.  Reepicheep is fabulous and hilarious and while Eustace is annoying, he was perfectly cast!  The actor that plays him is totally annoying and offensive the first 3/4 of the movie.

I felt that this movie was far more overtly Christian than the others and I loved that.  I loved the message at the end!  There is some scary stuff in the movie - a pretty gnarly and nasty sea serpent with a lot of creepy tentacles, however, I feel that my seven year old could handle it.  Maybe not on a big screen, but definitely when it comes out on dvd (oops, it's all blueray now, I guess).

If you haven't read The Chronicles of Narnia to your kids, or if they are old enough to read them, I would highly recommend it.  We have read The Magician's Nephew and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe with our son, and are working through the others over the next couple of years.
