Anxiety and 8 Year Olds

I took my son to the doctor today because he has been complaining of stomach aches on and off for the past few weeks.  I looked up anxiety in children and it fit the bill.  He will call me asking me to pick him up from school because his stomach is hurting so badly.  It's hard to know if he is faking, because when he gets home he seems "fine".  Well, I realized that if he is faking it this much, there are other issues, so today we took a trip to the pediatrician.  I have to promote our pediatrician.  After 8 years of going to him I have never once had a bad experience from shots to well-child visits.  He always asks for my input and insight and tells me to trust my instinct.  When I was a basketcase about not being able to breastfeed my daughter, he said, "Do you think that all mothers who can breastfeed are better mothers?"  When I said no, he said, "Neither do I."  I love him for that.  His name is Dr. Matthew Cornish and he works for Utah Valley Pediatrics.  There's the plug.

I rarely take my kids to their pediatrician because he isn't close to us.  Normally I just take them to instacare unless it is something like this.  So we usually only see him 1-2 times a year for each kid.  It's amazing that he still remembers them, but he really does.  He remembers previous conversations we have had about them as well.  So imagine how grateful I was when he said, "I'm going to take you through the the body the possible typical ailments.  If something resonates, stop me and we'll discuss it.

After talking about 10 different things I said, "My gut (ha!) says anxiety and bladder spasms."  He said, "Let's go with your gut first."  So we discussed coping mechanisms to work on with him for the anxiety and some medication to try for the bladder spasms to see if that will help him.  I am also going to use a variety of essential oils - lavender, balance, and a few others - to help him to relax.  I think I will also include him in yoga once he is out of school to help with his digestion.  And, green smoothies, of course.

  1. Hi, I have an idea for a blog post. You've seen the trailer for the "Alive Inside" documentary? Very old people in nursing homes who seem nearly comatose get all spunky and talkative when they listen to music that they loved in their youth. You can watch it here: http://vimeo.com/10926284 Warning: You will probably cry, but they'll be happy tears.

Ok, so my blog post idea is for you (and maybe lots of other people) to post their lists of "What To Put On My iPad When I'm in the Nursing Home." See, I'm slightly worried that well-meaning young'uns will just ASSUME that since I grew up in the 80s, I'm going to want to listen to Tiffany and Peter Cetera and "Careless Whisper" over and over again. (Oh man, how I hate "Careless Whisper.") So I think it's important to record your preferences while you still have the chance. For posterity, see?

So, what would spunk YOU up in the nursing home?
